Meet Ron Withers
Ron Withers wasn’t able to attend college just out of high school. Instead, he established Withers Concessions, a business he has owned for the past 34 years, and started a family. After his children had grown, Withers decided to go back to school and earn a degree. He wanted to improve his writing skills, possibly become a history teacher, and—more than anything—have the satisfaction of holding a college degree.
Withers found the general studies program at IU Kokomo, which allowed him to earn credit for his life experiences and which accepted the college credits he’d managed to accumulate over the years. He earned a Bachelor of General Studies in 2006, making it possible for him to attend graduate school.
Withers is now working on his master’s thesis at IUPUI, and expects to earn his degree in December 2008. He hopes to use his education to teach college-level history and work in a museum.
